XER Reader opens .mpp, .xml and .mpx files from Microsoft Project, with no Microsoft Project installation. With XER Reader Personal it is free for personal, non-commercial use, on Windows, on a Mac and in a browser.
On a Mac
Microsoft Project's desktop app runs only on Windows. XER Reader has its own Mac app, so a schedule from Microsoft Project opens on a Mac with no Windows virtual machine. See MPP Viewer for Mac.

Open an .mpp file free, step by step
- Create your account on the sign-up page with your name, email address and a password.
- Open the link in the email we send you to confirm your address, then sign in.
- On your account page, under How will you use XER Reader?, choose Personal and click Use XER Reader Personal for free.
- Download XER Reader for Windows or Mac from the Downloads page, or click Launch Online Viewer there to use it in your browser.
- Log in to XER Reader with the same email address and password.
- Click the File menu, then Open, and select your
.mpp,.xmlor.mpxfile.
The activity table opens on the left and the Gantt chart on the right. In the Windows and Mac apps you can also drag the file into the XER Reader window.
What you can do with the schedule
- Set the Gantt chart's timescale and zoom.
- Group activities, or filter and sort on a column.
- Trace predecessors and successors, or read the logic in the network diagram.
- See who works on what in the Resource Assignment view.
- Read the S-Curve. Baselines saved in the Microsoft Project file come with it, and the S-Curve measures against them.
- Export the schedule to PDF.

A project with more than 1,000 activities does not open on XER Reader Personal: XER Reader says how many activities it has and that your plan opens up to 1,000 at a time.
